“You’ve Been Swarmed” Awareness Campaign & Fundraiser Launches

The Buzz is…You’ve Been Swarmed:

Bee Inspired Program & Advisory Council Sponsoring Awareness Campaign and Fundraiser During Let’s Talk Month!

October is when leaves are falling, coffee shops are serving up pumpkin-flavored java, and when the Bee Inspired Program celebrates Let’s Talk Month . Each year the Program jumps on board the opportunity to raise awareness and education for crucial conversations on “tough topics”, as well as increasing youth-adult communication. Let’s Talk Month is recognized both locally and nationally. The campaign is dedicated to helping parents, caregivers, and other adults talk to youth about relationships and other sexual health-related topics in an open, honest and comprehensive way. The goal for Bee Inspired Program this October is to encourage youth-adult communication on a variety of health-related topics through teachable moments, activities/events, marketing and a “You’ve Bee Swarmed” fundraiser and awareness Campaign.

The buzz is swarms of bees will be making their appearance across Hamilton and Wright Counties thanks to the Bee Inspired CAPP Program through Building Families, and the Program’s Advisory Council. The bees will be buzzing around the serving area from October 7th-October 30th, with the swarms nesting in yards for two to five days. There will be at least one swarm of bees making their way around both counties, within the city limits of Webster City and Eagle Grove.

Buzzworthy Details on Placing, Relocation, & Removal:
🐝$20 Donation: A swarm will be placed, removed, and/or relocated from and individual’s yard, business, or other location.

🐝$25 Donation: An individual may purchase INSURANCE, and guarantee that a swarm will NOT be placed or relocated to their yard or business. This provides protection from future swarming, throughout the Campaign.

🐝If individuals are unable to donate at the time, they may contact the Program’s Coordinator to have a Trained Swarming Technician remove the bees at no cost.

🐝All funds raised throughout the Campaign go to support the various programming, projects, and services provided through the Bee Inspired Program. The Bee Inspired Program through Building Families serves Franklin, Hamilton, and Wright Counties, effective July 1, 2019.

🐝All donations may be made payable to Building Families (Memo Line: Bee Inspired Program), and sent to:

SHIFT Happens to Sponsor End of Summer Spikeball Bash

SHIFT Happens (Students Helping Impact Future Teens) invites YOU to participate in their first ever End of Summer Spikeball Bash. The event is scheduled for Saturday August 10, 2019 at the Nokomis Park/Middleton Sports Complex in Webster City. Sign-up starts at 1pm, with the event launching at approximately 1:30pm. There will be NO ENTRY FEE for this event. However, free will donations will be be accepted. All funds raised will go toward future events and activities sponsored by SHIFT Happens.

So what is Spikeball? The activity is kind of like volleyball and foursquare blended, but with a cornhole/bags scoring system. In other words it is a TRIFECTA OF FUN!  It is a two-on-two game.  Youth (grade 7 & up) AND Adults may enter a team, and those youth and adults will then compete in the same bracket. It can be a combo of any age or gender, consisting of the following options:  Youth-Youth Teammates, Youth-Adult Teammates, or Adult-Adult Teammates.

The team sport is played with a small, yellow ball that is hit onto a circle trampoline-like net. The exciting part of the activity is that there are no boundaries as to where the players stand while playing. Individuals will play at a very basic, beginner level for this year’s bash (a lot of the SHIFTers and community are new to this Spikeball/Roundnet sensation, so we are starting at an amateur level). The number of teams signed up will determine the point system for the event. Players will serve the ball down on the trampoline, and each team will then have three hits between them (sort of like bump, set, & spike). A team will then score a point when the other team hits the rim or ground with the ball, or allows it to bounce on the net twice. (Note: more rules for the event will be shared the day of the event).

Spikeball has become increasingly popular since it aired on the television show, Shark Tank. The SHIFT Happens youth thought it would be an engaging new activity for the Webster City area to enjoy before school kicks-off in late August. The event allows for youth and adults in the community to build positive connections, while taking part in substance-free fun in the sun!

Bee Inspired Program through Building Families: A Successful Bidder in Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP) Program Awards

On Friday May 31, 2019, the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) Agency announced their intent to award funding to successful bidders for the Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP) Program Grant. The Bee Inspired Program through Building Families is proud to announce that they are one of the several successful bidders to receive this funding. The formal contract will take effect on July 1, 2019, for the serving area of Franklin, Hamilton, and Wright Counties.
In January 2019, DHS released the Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP) Program Local Service Project Grants Request for Proposal (RFP) for the purposes of implementing Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention strategies across the state at the local level. Agencies were eligible to apply for the grant funds in an effort to reduce the rates of Adolescent pregnancy and Adolescent childbearing in Iowa communities by implementing Evidence-Based, Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention strategies to youth in Iowa. The programming is to be inclusive of gender identity and gender expression, with specific attention and programming offered to High-risk/High-need populations. Services provided as a result of this procurement may vary amongst the awarded bidders, but shall be provided to Adolescents (non-pregnant, pregnant, or parenting), parents/caregivers, and community members including but not limited to, youth-serving organizations, Out-of-Home Placement residential facilities for Adolescents, schools, and/or faith communities. More specific details on programming and services to be offered in Franklin, Hamilton, and Wright Counties by the Bee Inspired Program through Building Families will be shared after the contract is finalized.
The Bee Inspired Program through Building Families has been providing services and programming in Hamilton, Humboldt, Wright Counties since 2008 through the CAPP Grant. Over the last couple of years, they expanded services into the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura School District Area in Hancock/Cerro Gordo Counties, and just this last year expanded into Franklin County.
This new fiscal year and new CAPP Program Grant award will bring several changes. The biggest being an updated service coverage area. It is with a heavy heart, the Program announces discontinuation of services in Humboldt, Hancock, and Cerro Gordo Counties effective June 30, 2019. As mentioned above, the Program intends to serve Franklin, Hamilton, and Wright Counties effective July 1, 2019 (pending the finalized contract with DHS). Additionally, programming and services will look a bit different starting in the new fiscal year. However, the Program will be continuing to provide vital adolescent sexual health programming, services and resources in the communities that assists in accomplishing the goal to decrease the rates of sexually transmitted diseases/infections (STDs/STIs), adolescent pregnancies, and additional pregnancies to pregnant/parenting adolescents. By being awarded the CAPP Program Grant for at least three additional years, the Bee Inspired Program through Building Families is able to continue their mission to empower ALL adolescents to make healthy informed decisions through education and community awareness!

The Bee Inspired Program would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the youth, parents/caregivers, school district educators and administrators, community providers (especially the Public Health entities and staff), businesses, civic and non-profit organizations, Council Members, Board Members, community champions, and other individuals that have supported and/or been involved in the programming and services over the years, in Humboldt County and the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura School District Area within Hancock/Cerro Gordo Counties. We appreciate the relationships that have been built in an effort to help children and families be happier, healthier, and more successful; especially  around the education, prevention and awareness of adolescent sexual health topics.

The Bee Inspired Program through Building Families encourages youth ages 12-19 that live in or attend school in Hamilton, Humboldt, and Wright Counties to enter the SHARE YOUR TALENT Challenge. • Share a response to, “I am powerful when…”
• Respond to, “How are you empowered to make healthy, informed decisions?”
• Highlight ways youth can “bee empowered” to be healthy, or more!

Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) Program Opportunity

Youth in Philanthropy Program in Hamilton County
Applications for High School Juniors due December 17th!

The Enhance Hamilton County Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) Program allows juniors and seniors from Hamilton County to experience philanthropy first hand, by reviewing grants and awarding monies steered by their decisions to assist local non-profit organizations.  A total of eight area students (four juniors and four seniors) participate in the Youth in Philanthropy Program and represent both the South Hamilton and Webster City Community School Districts.

Student Advisory members will receive a $250 scholarship for each year they participate as a Youth in Philanthropy member for a maximum scholarship of $500 from the Enhance Hamilton County Foundation.

For more information on the Youth in Philanthropy program, contact Tiffany Larson, Committee Chair, at tlarson@co.wright.ia.us or by calling (o) 515.602.6371 x 4 (c) 515.835.1836.

Tentative 2018-2019 Timeline:

  1. YiP Advisory Committee members will be recruited through an application process (students can be recommended by school guidance counselors and educators, outside agencies, and more). The Advisory Committee will consist of four (4) students from South Hamilton High School and Webster City High School (2 juniors and 2 seniors), plus the YiP Program Chair, Tiffany Larson of Bee Inspired CAPP Program through Building Families.   For the 2018-2019 School Year, the students that served last year will be given the opportunity to serve again this year.  This excludes the students that graduated.  The empty spots will then be filled via the recruitment process.
  2. Goal: To engage youth in understanding the importance of philanthropy and introducing them to causes/needs throughout Hamilton County.
  3. Requirement: The Advisory Committee would perform under the same guidelines and act alongside the EHCF Grant Review Committee, by reviewing all incoming grant applications during a specified grant cycle.

Each member will be required to attend initial orientation meeting(s), tentatively set for January/February, to discuss the vision of the Enhance Hamilton County Foundation and to go through grant process including scoring information and deadlines. The meeting(s) will be led by Tiffany Larson (YiP Program Chair), with Rick Young (EHCF President) and Darcy Swon (EHCF Development Director) in attendance to answer specific Foundation questions.  Each YiP committee member must review each grant score according to the Rubric that will be provided. There will be an Individual meeting and large group meeting(s) to help score.  The totals will then be submitted to Darcy Swon (EHCF Development Director) for compilation. Tiffany Larson will share the scheduled sessions (with South Hamilton and Webster City) for YiP committee members to come and ask questions if they are needing some assistance understanding the grant application and process.  At the meeting(s), YiP committee members will gather to discuss the applications and compile their recommendations. YiP committee recommendations will be submitted to the EHCF Foundation Board for review and approval. The ECHF Board will determine the total amount of funds that the YiP program can grant out per cycle prior to the grant cycle commencing.

YiP committee representatives will be a part of the EHCF Grant Awards presentation on March 5, 2019.  All committee members MUST be in attendance to receive their scholarship(s).

  1. Scholarship: To entice students to participate in this program, each YiP committee member will receive $250 per year they serve on this committee. For those serving two years, they will receive a $500 scholarship. New this year is that all committee members MUST attend the Awards presentation in March to receive the scholarship. Tiffany and Darcy will generate a press release regarding the YiP program for distribution through local media, social media and the Foundation’s website.

For more information about the Enhance Hamilton County Foundation, the tools they offer the YiP Program, or additional questions, feel free visit their website at http://www.enhancehamiltoncounty.org, or contact Darcy Swon at 515.835.0437 or via email at dswon@enhancehamiltoncounty.org.

2018 “Triple A” Recipients Honored: 3 Receive Approachable Adult Awards

May was Teen Empowerment Month, and throughout the month youth and adults were asked to nominate individuals they felt met criteria for the Triple A, Approachable Adult Award. In June, the Bee Inspired CAPP Program and Advisory Council selected three very valuable members of the serving area to receive the honor. The winners of this distinguished award went to Leah Feltz (Hamilton County), Heather Nielsen (Humboldt County), and Sara Abbas (Wright County), for their amazing work with youth, and for being approachable adults for youth.  The award recipients received Bee Inspired “swag bags” and plaques, thanking them for their dedication to youth.

Prom and graduation season, followed by the long summer months tend to be a time when risky behaviors increase for youth. The Bee Inspired Council’s mission is that all youth be empowered to make healthy informed decisions through education and community awareness. Having approachable adults are fundamental to the success of youth. Approachable adults are the ones who inspire and motivate youth to stick to their goals, and encourage them to be healthy and successful. The recipients of this award do just that.  They work diligently to build connections in both their personal and professional lives to build connections that are positive and authentic with youth.

The Bee Inspired Council’s goal with this award was to highlight adults who are approachable for youth, in an effort to encourage other adults to do the same. Criterion for the “Triple A” were the adults had to be considered ASKABLE, where they actively listen to and provide feedback in a non-judgmental manner. Secondly, they had to be someone who strives to BUILD BRIDGES with youth, by engaging them in conversation and activities. These special adults use “teachable moments” when the opportunity knocks, and they not only educate youth on healthy behaviors like brushing their teeth and eating their vegetables, but also cover “tough topics” like relationships, self-esteem, body image, drugs & alcohol, and/or sexual health. Many provide safe spaces and activities for youth to engage, and do it in a teen-friendly manner. Lastly, the Approachable Adult had to be someone that CONTINUES TO LEARN ways to enrich youth-adult connections. This could be through community and youth involvement, positive youth development, service-learning projects, attending workshops or classes for ongoing learning and mentoring, and more. Awardees had to live and/or work in Hamilton, Humboldt, or Wright County, be a parent/caregiver, teacher/educator, coach, neighbor, mentor, role model, and be someone who shows good character and demonstrates a positive impact with youth.

Leah Feltz serves as the County Youth Coordinator through the Hamilton County ISU Extension and Outreach Office. She was nominated for being a “great resource for ALL youth in Hamilton County, including those in 4-H and not in 4-H. She is willing to be a helping hand, listening ear, or smiling face for youth across Hamilton County. This includes being a leader for Hamilton County’s Youth Council, teaching leaders through Ricochet at the Webster City Middle School, teaching middle-schoolers about healthy snacks, and more.”  The individuals went on to share that Leah also served as a substitute teacher for Hamilton County schools before serving as County Youth Coordinator. She had multiple nominations for being an approachable adult. One anonymous individual mentioned, “besides her witty charm and inviting charisma, Leah’s approachability as an adult is built upon her relentless pursuit of engaging youth and creating a place for them to be heard and empowered. Her work as county youth coordinator, especially through the 4-H program, not only builds leaders but gives all youth a sense of belonging. She is intent on building bridges whether it be culturally, economically, socially, etc. She helps brings groups and individuals together everyday to work together for the greater good. She sees the best in people and brings it out in them. Youth are drawn to real people who show real love and really believe in them. She’s one of those people, and you can see it through the multitude of relationships she’s formed with the youth of our county.”

Heather Nielsen is a teacher in the Humboldt School District. She works with both middle and high school-aged youth. She was described by her nominators as being “a champion for her students” by being askable and “always continuing to look for new ways to meet the needs of her students.”  Another mentioned her “consistent pursuit to connect students with resources in the community.” Another individual highlighted “Heather’s ability to enhance youth-adult connections.” The have personally witnessed her efforts when she took on the teacher advisor role of the Rotary Interact Club in Humboldt. Heather didn’t hesitate to help with becoming the teacher advisor for the “mini Rotary” club, where it bridges the adult Rotary and the youth Rotary so that they can carry out the same objectives of Rotary and their service-based programming efforts.

Sara Abbas is a Nurse at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Wright County. She was nominated for being an “amazing mentor for children in the community and clinic. She is well known for her kindness, concern and consideration for all young people. She is readily available at all times, and volunteers time and service.”  Sara’s nominator mentioned her being known to have large groups of kids at her home, where she provides food and a place for someone to stay as needed. “She has a great rapport with all ages. She is very approachable and has at times assisted kids with tough questions about a multitude of health issues and answers very professionally, yet in a manner that is easily understood. She grew up in Wright County and has remained there for most of her life.” The individual shared that Sara would talk to her daughters when they were younger and she always made them feel they were very important and they could go to her with everything. They still feel this way today. “Sara attends most of the high school activities, and makes herself available to help out when needed.”

Thank you to all the individuals who nominated adults in your community. There are so many working to make positive impacts on to youth. We will be seeking nominations again next year, so “bee on the lookout” for approachable adults in your community. For more information on the Bee Approachable Award (Triple A), the Bee Inspired Program, or the Advisory Council feel free to contact Tiffany Larson, the Bee Inspired Program Coordinator.

Movie Event: Grease on Monday 6/18/18

The Buzz is…We’re Sponsoring “Grease” to Encourage Youth-Adult Convos
The Bee Inspired Program and Advisory Council invite community members to a FREE showing of the movie, “Grease”. The event is scheduled for Monday June 18, 2018 at 7pm at The Webster Theater, located in Webster City. The 1978 classic “Grease” is a musical set in the 1950’s. The movie covers the big high school moments for Sandy and Danny at Rydell High: the big pep rally, the school dance, worrying about image, and falling in love. June 2018 will be the film’s 40th Anniversary.
The mission of the Bee Inspired CAPP Program is to empower ALL youth to make healthy informed decisions through education and community awareness in Hamilton, Humboldt, and Wright Counties, as well as the GHV School District Area in parts of Hancock and Cerro Gordo Counties. This includes increasing youth and adult conversations. It is important for parents, caregivers, and other adults to be Askable, Build Bridges with youth by using teachable moments to talk about “tough topics”, and Continue to Learn ways to “bee approachable”. The Council felt that this film was made in the 70’s, was set in the 50’s, and shines a light on issues that are still relatable to youth TODAY in 2018 (i.e. cliques, substance use, relationships, social and cultural barriers, and other sexual health topics). The goal is for members of the community to come to the FREE movie; with parents/caregivers or other adults and youth attending together. From there, with the help of a discussion guide, be encouraged to go home and have open dialogue on these various topics.
DISCLAIMER: This classic movie is Rated PG. However, due to some mature themes, profanity, and sensitive content (i.e. substance use and sexual health topics) it is recommended for viewers age 12 and older. The Council is leaving it up to the discretion of parents and/or caregivers on whether their youth attend the event. We are asking that youth under the age of 14 attend with an adult. For those with concerns, below are resources and reviews on the film.
1. Common Sense Media: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/grease
2. IMDB: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0077631/parentalguide?ref_=m_tt_stry_pg
The Bee Inspired Program Advisory Council invites the public to attend this free community showing of “Grease” as we wrap-up activities from May’s Teen Empowerment Month, and the summer break gets in full-swing. This is the time of year when risky behaviors increase for youth. It is so vitally important for youth and adults to increase communication. The discussion questions provide an opportunity to do just that. For families to TALK. The movie provides many messages and themes that are worth discussing. The admission will be FREE, with approximately 200+ seats available on first come first serve basis. The concession stand will be open, and patrons will be responsible for purchasing their own snacks. For questions or information on the movie event or the Bee Inspired Program, individuals may buzz over to our social media accounts, or contact the Bee Inspired CAPP Program Coordinator at 515.602.6371 (ext. 4) or beeinspiredcappprogram@gmail.com.

Gearing up for 2018-19 Programming

It is that time of year again!  We are in full grant-writing mode.  We are busy little bees working on the grant renewal for the Bee Inspired CAPP Program through Building Families. Part of the process is planning programming implementation in the area school districts, alternative settings, and in the communities for the 2018-19 year (July 1, 2018- June 30, 2019). You may be already aware, but the Bee Inspired Program has been providing FREE programming in Hamilton, Humboldt, and Wright Counties for almost ten years. Just last year, the program expanded to also serve the GHV school district in Hancock/Cerro Gordo Counties.

The program is available to offer comprehensive programs in health-related education. Through the grant funds we are able to implement age-appropriate, medically accurate, and evidence-based curricula that meets the Iowa Human Growth and Development Mandate. The Program also offers supplemental/topical presentations to districts and alternative settings in the serving area. As a Certified Sexual Health Educator (CSHE), our Bee Inspired CAPP Program Coordinator is a resource to youth, schools, parents/caregivers, organizations, and community members on various adolescent sexual health topics. These supplemental presentations can consist of anything from relationships and teen dating violence, puberty, anatomy and reproduction, sexting/internet safety and prevention, STD/STI and pregnancy prevention, and more. Programming can also be adapted for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental needs. Additionally, we are able to provide programming that addresses non-sexual risk and protective factors (which may include pregnant and parenting teens).

The Bee Inspired Program is currently partnering with several school districts and alternative settings in the serving area. For the renewal process, we are looking for groups, agencies, or entities interested in partnering on youth-focused projects.  Additionally, we are seeking options to offer programming in alternative settings. Any suggestions and feedback are welcome regarding opportunities to reach out to youth, offer workshops/presentations to parents, caregivers, and other adults, and other additional programming possibilities.

To help with process, any input or feedback is asked to be submitted by 12pm on Monday April 9, 2018. Feel free to contact us if you have additional questions.  Thank you in advance for helping to empower ALL adolescents in Hamilton, Humboldt, and Wright Counties (as well as the GHV Community District in Hancock and Cerro Gordo Counties) to make healthy informed decisions through education and community awareness.

SHIFT Happens Youth Program to Host Annual Dodge For A Cause Event on 2/23/18

Are you ready to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge? Students in 5th-12th grades, as well as families and/or community members, are invited to participate in the Annual Dodge For A Cause Dodgeball Tournament, sponsored by SHIFT (Students Helping Impact Future Teens) Happens. The event is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2018 (with a back-up date set for March 23, 2018 in case of inclement weather). Check-in starts at 5:30pm, with the “first throw” following at 6:00pm. The event will be returning to Jeff Gym, located at the Webster City Middle School (1101 Des Moines Street) in Webster City. Teams of 8-10 members per team are welcome, and registration is only $5 per participant (or $50 per team).
There will be three (3) tournament brackets again this year; Middle School (5th-8th grades), High School (9th-12th grades), and a Community/Family Combo bracket. Any 5th-12th grade student in Hamilton County, as well as families, businesses, non-profit or civic groups, or community members are invited to pick their team, choose their theme, dress it up, and participate in this fun, substance-free event. Individuals may also support the cause by coming to the tournament, sponsoring a team, donating door prizes, or purchasing t-shirts. Admission for spectators will be free-will-donation. All funds raised will go toward the launching of a Youth Mentoring Program in the community. Webster City Rotary After Hours will be partnering on the SHIFT Happens efforts this year, as their February Civic Project! An added perk is the option to challenge a team. Want to play against your rival on the court? Want to challenge another family, group, or business? We can do our best to make that happen. Send a “Dodgeball Throwdown Challenge” via Social Media by following the rules on our Facebook page.
SHIFT Happens focuses on making an IMPACT in the community by helping teens be Above the Influence, and sponsoring awareness and prevention events that help make a difference for others. It is coordinated by the Bee Inspired CAPP Program through Building Families.  Several events were held over the last eight years to increase awareness in the community on various prevention topics, including alcohol and other drugs. The past dodgeball tourneys raised funds for the Jorden Leeper Memorial Youth Scholarship Fund, the re-opening of the Webster Theater, SHIFT Happens to offer substance-free youth activities, and to purchase items that increase peer engagement and inclusion in the special education classrooms throughout the school district. This year the SHIFTers are raising funds that will assist a local collaborative positively IMPACT youth in the community. Youth want positive, authentic youth-adult connections. By training adults in the community to serve as mentors for adolescents, the program is not only bridging a gap; but also helping to build happy, healthy, independent, and successful children and families in a community where all youth are able to thrive. SHIFT Happens encourages the community to help rally for this great cause!
